General Questions
When do I need to book my cake?
Overall, the earlier you book the better! Some dates can fill quickly and once you have placed your order your date is secure. I can take bookings for wedding cakes up to 1 year in advance but don’t worry if you think you’ve left it too late. Subject to availability I can fulfill short notice orders
Do you only offer the designs on your website?
No. If you have seen a picture of a cake elsewhere or have something else in mind I can turn your ideas into reality. All cakes are tailored to meet your requirements in order for your ideas to be incorporated
How many people do the cakes feed?
As a general guide the novelty cakes feed approx 35 however please advise me as to the number of portions you require. Celebrations cakes can be baked to meet your requirements
Unfortunately it is not possible to have fresh cream in your cake. Many cakes require a lot of detail and due to the time it takes to decorate the cake it means it is not suitable.
All cakes should be stored at room temperature, out of direct sunlight on a flat stable surface. Never put your cake in the fridge. Sponge, Chocolate and Carrot cake are best consumed with 3 days of delivery/collection. Fruitcake lasts for months not years. It is recommended that fruit cakes are stripped of icing and marzipan before wrapping in clingfilm and frozen.

Cakes can be delivered on a specific date however I cannot offer specified times. Please note that there is a limit to the number of cakes I can deliver in one day. Whilst I may be available to make a cake for you by a specific date, delivery is not always available.
Wedding Specific
What size wedding cake do I need?
You need a wedding cake large enough to ensure that each guest receives a slice. At your consultation I shall calculate the size of wedding cake you need to give you the number or portions required without you having to pay for excess cake. If a two tier wedding cake will provide enough portions I can add a dummy tier to your cake to provide you with the look of a three tier wedding cake without the extra cost.
Can I have a mix of flavours in my wedding cake?
Yes. Each tier can be a different flavour and because each tier is supported by dowels, you do not have to have fruit as the bottom tier!
Do you offer a consultation service?
For wedding cakes I offer a free no obligation consultation where you come and meet with me at my home, providing a friendly and personal service. This is an opportunity for you to peruse my full portfolio and try some of the delicious cakes available to you whilst working on a one to one basis to create your perfect wedding cake.
Can you colour match my wedding cake?
If you can provide swatches of materials I can colour match your wedding cake as close as possible
Can I have fresh flowers on my wedding cake?
Of course. Using fresh flowers on a wedding cake looks beautiful and these can either be purchased through your florist or I can purchase them through my supplier
Do you make the bride and groom figures?
Yes. These are hand made by myself and are made to resemble you as closely as possible. If you can provide pictures of yourselves and descriptions of the wedding outfits I can do the rest.
When do I pay for my wedding cake?
A £50 deposit is required to book your wedding cake with the balance payable 4 weeks before your wedding.
How do I pay for my wedding cake?
Payment can be made via cash, cheque or card (Paypal). A 2% charge applies to payments made by card. Please make cheques payable to M Shulman.
Do you deliver my wedding cake to the venue?
Yes. I always deliver my wedding cakes in the morning to ensure that they arrive in plenty of time for your big day. Delivery and set up free to local venues. Please contact me for a quotation if your wedding is slightly further afield.
Can I collect my wedding cake?
If you wish, you may collect your wedding cake but delivery and set up is recommended. Once your cake has been collected it is no longer the responsibility of Cakes by Shelly.
Do you hire cake stands and knives?
Wedding cakes stands and knives are available to hire. There is a charge of £10 per stand. A £50 security deposit is required and this shall be reimbursed once the stand and/or knife have been returned. Stands should be returned within 3 weeks.
Complaints
Complaints are very rare and due to the amount of work put into each individual cake I take them seriously. Complaints regarding the decoration of the cake can be easily repaired so errors of this nature must be pointed out upon delivery/collection so as to give me the opportunity to correct them.
Where the complaint is in regards to the quality of the cake, the cake, or remainder of the cake, must be returned within 24 hours to ensure I am able to fairly assess the nature of the complaint.
